Born in 1970, on the East coast of Canada into the Miqmak Nation, Derek was adopted by a Norwegian mother and  Canadian father. From his earliest days, Derek has been an artist. Derek now resides on Vancouver Island.

The Haida and Kwakiutl Nation artists of the Pacific Northwest coast, particularly Willie Seaweed who was a Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) master carver, have significantly influenced Derek’s carving style. Born in 1873  - 1967, Willie Seaweed is considered a major innovator of the Kwakiutl style. Derek has received permission from the Seaweed family to learn from the considerable legacy of work that Willie left. In application of his carving, Derek continues to discover and reconnect with his traditional roots. Appleton Galleries is pleased to represent Derek, who is a young artist of considerable talent.
