Ronald Appleton and his late
father, Harry, established Appleton Galleries, as well as Appleton
Auction Galleries in the late 1960’s. Over the years, and through
the introduction in Montreal to the manager of La Federation des
Cooperatives, the father and son team became dedicated conveyors of
First Nations and Inuit Art. Auctions were held in Vancouver, Victoria,
Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Hamilton during the 1970’s and
1980’s.
The Appleton family operated
the gallery in its original location on Seymour Street for over 30 years
along with a second gallery, Heritage of Inuit Art, on bustling
Robson Street in the early 1970’s. In 1994 the Appletons moved to their
current address at 1451 Hornby Street in downtown Vancouver close to Yaletown.
The Appletons have
established themselves as specialists in original Inuit Art, providing
sales and appraisals for individuals, estates, and other galleries.
Carvings are obtained directly from the artists, or their agents, and from
the various Inuit owned and operated cooperatives.
Their Inuit collection comprises over 4000 sculptures made of
soapstone, whalebone, and ivory. The Northwest Coast collection contains
mainly ceremonial masks and other traditional items crafted of red and
yellow cedar.
Appleton Galleries is open
for sales, appraisals, and consultations weekday mornings 8:00 AM through
1:00 PM, or through appointment by calling us directly. |
