Steve has been carving since 1987.  He was taught by his father, award-winning Native artist, Harris Smith and his great-grandfather.

There are many groups of Native Peoples indigenous to the coast of British Columbia.  The Smith family belong to the people who are commonly called Kwakiutl (Kwakiutl), originating from both Oweekeno Village and Campbell River.

Steve’s unique artistic style has been greatly influenced by his late father Harris, and great-grandfather, Lalkawilas (former Hereditary Chief of The Campbell River Band) who taught Harris the skills of carving, painting, and design.

Harris proudly inherited his Grandfather’s name and signed all of his work Lalkawilas (“Chief who feasts the people till morning”).

Steve signs his work with the name Dla’ Kwagila (“made to be copper”).

Steve’s pieces include: carvings in basswood, yellow and red cedar and alder, masks, poles and original paintings. He has also completed an 8' pole in collaboration with his father and brother Rod Smith.  Steve is best known for his beautiful maple bowls and plates.  Appleton Galleries is fortunate to work with an artist of Steve’s caliber.
