is very pleased to announce that the prestigious Winnipeg Art Gallery
hosted a solo show featuring the acclaimed Inuit artist, Abraham
Anghik Ruben, who now calls British Columbia his home. Originally from
Paulatuk, Northwest Territories, Abraham has become a major innovative force
among Inuit sculptors. Exhibiting
since 1974, he has studied printmaking, silversmithing, sculpture, and bronze
casting. Brought together by the Winnipeg
Art Gallery Curator of Inuit Art, Darlene Wight, this exhibit opened September
16th, 2001 through March 2002, with a
possibility of touring to other venues following the show in Winnipeg. The
Winnipeg Art Gallery continues to be a world leader in exhibits featuring Inuit
Artists, and is renowned internationally for its incomparable collection. We are honoured to represent
Abraham, and have a long-standing professional relationship with him. It is our pleasure to assist Darlene with this important new show. Abraham’s work, based upon Inuvialuit mythology and culture, follows a family tradition of Shamanistic mysticism and transformation. His paternal great-grandfather was reputed to possess talents of voyaging to the moon, and the control of weather. His maternal great-grandmother, guided by her spirit serpent, was equally talented as a shaman of unique gifts. Abraham continues to explore these themes with skill and imagination in a contemporary retrospective. For further information on the
W.A.G. exhibition, or photographs of Abraham’s newest works available in our
Gallery, please contact us by e-mail, info@appletongalleries.com
